On the final night of 2025, as fireworks lit the sky and families gathered to welcome a new year, tragedy struck in Northridge, California. Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old Black father of two, was fatally shot by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. What should have been a night of celebration became a moment of mourning—and a flashpoint for a community already burdened by grief and injustice.
According to reports, Keith was outside his apartment complex, allegedly firing celebratory shots into the air—a tradition not uncommon in some communities. But within moments, an off-duty ICE agent, who lived in the same complex, confronted him. The agent claimed Keith pointed a weapon in his direction. In response, the agent opened fire, killing Keith on the spot.
But Keith’s family and neighbors tell a different story.
They say he was not a threat. They say he was celebrating. They say he was targeted. And now, they are demanding an independent investigation—one not led by the Los Angeles Police Department, but by the California Attorney General’s office. They want transparency. They want accountability. They want justice.
This is not an isolated incident. Keith’s death comes on the heels of another fatal ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis just days earlier. The pattern is chilling. The silence from officials is deafening. And the pain in our communities is unbearable.
Keith Porter Jr. was more than a headline. He was a father. A friend. A neighbor. A man who deserved to see 2026.
We say his name not just to remember him—but to demand that his life be valued, his death be investigated, and his family be heard.
We will not let this be swept under the rug. We will not let another Black life be reduced to a footnote in someone else’s report. We will organize. We will speak. We will fight.
Because Keith Porter Jr. deserved to live.
